The world of Early Childhood begins at birth and extends to eight years of age. Virden has early childhood programs for children and families beginning with pregnancy and going through elementary schools third grade.

• BIRTH to 3 Prevention Initiative
This Illinois State Board of Education Block Grant Program is at the Virden Parent Place in the Virden Center for Young Children at 18718 N. Rt 4 Virden, IL.

Parent Educator, Lori Dodd, serves families with children from birth to three years old at the center for young children.

Dawn Sanson is an RN, member of the "Parents as Teachers Program". Lamaze, Infant Massage, information and support on pregnancy, birth and delivery are also available at the Parent Place.

Beth Toon, Jennie Nichelson and Jody Reichmann serve children birth to three years old and their families with home visits, parent education and family support in the Carlinville school District.

• Play-Days: activities for you & your child to enjoy with other parents and their children - held the last Wednesday of the month when school is in session.

• Monthly Newsletters: schedule of events & information.
• Home Visits: once a month, or weekly, at your convenience. The educator will visit you & your child at home to give you new ideas & ways to help with the development of your child.
• Center-based Visits: if you prefer, can be alternated with home visits.
• Baby Talk Program: language, literature & love for infants.
• Parent Classes: a variety of topics throughout the year.
• Developmental Screening & Physical Assessments
• Referrals: prekindergarten program, day care & other resources.
• Infant & Child CPR Training & Demonstrations.

  • This Illinois State Board of Education block grant funded program supports families of infants and toddlers who may be at-risk of school failure. The Prevention Initiative Program provides services to 40 families from Carlinville, Girard, and Virden through the Virden Parent Place.

    Parents are assisted in developing a plan for their family and supported in making dreams a reality. Existing services within the community are used to support the plan. Parents in this "Baby Talk" certified program, gain knowledge in parenting, child growth and development, health care and family dynamics through in-home instruction, parent /child activities and parenting classes.

Prekindergarten

  • The Prekindergarten For All Program is located in the Virden Center for Young Children and is part of a Collaboration between the child care center, Head Start and Prekindergarten For All, an integrated classroom experience for children 3, 4, and 5 years of age. Each of the classrooms includes children meeting the prekindergarten enrollment criteria, children with special needs and typically developing children from the local child care center. The teaching team includes child care teachers and aids, the Prekindergarten For All staff and the Head Start teacher and aid.
  • The program includes comprehensive parent education, involvement and family support. Parent classes, parent/child activities, family events, family counseling, agency referrals, quarterly home visits, parenting resources and a book and toy lending library are a few of the services available through the Prekindergarten At Risk Program
