The world of Early Childhood begins at birth and extends to eight years of age. Virden has early childhood programs for children and families beginning with pregnancy and going through elementary schools third grade.

This Illinois State Board of Education Block Grant Program is at the Virden Parent Place on Virden school district grounds between the junior high and elementary schools. Parent Educator, Tammy Sloman, serves families with children from birth to three years old and is a certified member of the "Parents as Teachers Program". Lamaze, Infant Massage, information and support on pregnancy, birth and delivery are also available at the Parent Place.

• Resource center: parenting books, videos & magazines
• Play-Days: activities for you & your child to enjoy with other parents and their children - held the last Wednesday of the month when school is in session.
• Warm Line: Call anytime with questions regarding children & families.
• Parents as Teachers Program: You are your child's first & best teacher.
• Monthly Newsletters: schedule of events & information.
• Home Visits: once a month, or weekly, at your convenience. The educator will visit you & your child at home to give you new ideas & ways to help with the development of your child.
• Center-based Visits: if you prefer, can be alternated with home visits.
• Baby Talk Program: language, literature & love for infants.
• Parent Classes: a variety of topics throughout the year.
